SFI CRIMAC Workshop Explores Big Data Processing for Fisheries Acoustics

SFI CRIMAC hosted an open workshop focused on data processing methods for large volumes of plankton and fisheries acoustics data.

The event was in-person at IMR (Bergen, Norway) and online. Approximately 80 participated either in-person or online, representing 18 countries and 49 different research institutions and companies.

With acoustic data collection becoming more widespread across different platforms and applications, the workshop aimed to address the growing challenge of managing and analyzing massive datasets. The event featured expert presentations on current use cases, technological bottlenecks, and innovative solutions, including AI-driven processing pipelines, cloud-based services, and autonomous data collection systems.

The first day centered on case studies from IMR and other organizations, while the second day featured collaborative discussions on best practices for efficient big data analysis in fisheries acoustics.

The workshop aims to produce a peer-reviewed paper offering lessons learned, paths for increased collaboration, and guidance for future research and development.
